Gaetano Fiore wins the 2011 Il Segno Contemporary Art Prize

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Tweet The other weekend I was invited by my ever productive and active Italian artist friend Gaetano Fiore to attend the Il Segno Art Prize awards ceremony at the Zamenhof Art Gallery in Milan. I’d heard on the grapevine that Gaetano might well win a prize.  Indeed, he did

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Please note that you will no longer be able to leave comments on BlogfromItaly.com as the commenting system is about to be switched off for new posts. Don’t worry, as there is a reason for this, and it will be given as soon as some changes which are being made have taken place – this should happen in the next few days, or so. You will still be able to leave comments on older posts, but please do not , as they may be lost shortly – I don’t want this to happen, and I’m sure you do not either

Book Review: Forza, Italia by Bill Emmott

Monday, April 4th, 2011

I’ve just finished reading Bill Emmott ‘s Forza, Italia book, the subtitle of which is, translated from Italian: ‘How jump start post-Berlusconi Italy’. Forza, Italia made for interesting reading, and was not entirely what I expected, in that it did not home in on Berlusconi’s deficiencies, even if they were mentioned from time to time. Overall though, the book portrays Italy as being a land of enormous, but as yet unrealised, potential.

RubyGate Trial Coming Soon to a TV Near You!

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Some Italian wags have created a very clever video ‘trailer’ for the media event of the year – Berlusconi ‘s forthcoming Rubygate bunga bunga trial, which hits a court near you in Milan on the 6th April – unless Italy’s prime minister can find a way to get out of it. Funnily enough, seeing as he usually stays out of court, this time, Berlusconi has decided to actually appear in court in order to prove his innocence – he does deny both the charges – namely that he paid an under-age prostitute, Ruby, for sex, and then abused his power to have Ruby extricated from police custody after she was arrested on suspicion of theft

Italian Design Classic: Brionvega Algol portable TV

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

In this trip into the world of Italian design, I am going to take a look at that Italian design classic: the Brionvega Algol portable TV. Whilst Brionvega has produced many stylish products, it is the Algol model that stands out for me. With its quirky design, extractable chromed handle and small, angled screen, it certainly belongs to a bygone era in contrast to today’s huge flat screen televisions.

Italian Design Interview: Memphis Design Collector Dennis Zanone

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Following on from my previous article discussing the Memphis movement , I was thrilled that it generated a lot of interest and got a great response. I was also contacted by an avid collector of Memphis design, based in, appropriately enough, Memphis , Tennessee in America: Dennis Zanone , who was kind enough to agree to do a cross-Atlantic interview regarding his collection which I wish to share with you today. If you’ve been reading my articles on BlogfromItaly.com, you’ll know that I am a designer who is fascinated by design, and in particular the evolution of Italian design
