Britain’s Charles and Camilla visit Venice

Venice must not become a ”historical theme park”, Britain’s Prince Charles said here on Tuesday on the final day of a three-day official visit to Italy. Addressing a Venice lagoon industrial regeneration seminar, the prince presented a five-point plan on architecture and the environment and explained his vision for large urban areas.

Ten new migrant expulsion centres ‘by end of 2009′

Ten new identification and expulsion centres (CIEs) for illegal immigrants may be ready by the end of the year, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Tuesday. Speaking on the sidelines of an Italy-Poland bilateral meeting, Maroni said the centres would be opened in ten different Italian regions, ”close to airports, principally military ones and far from inhabited centres”

Fiat-Chrysler to seal deal on thursday, Elkann says

Fiat and US automaker Chrysler will seal a partnership deal by Thursday evening, in time for the May 1 deadline set by the American government, Fiat Deputy Chairman John Elkann said on Tuesday.

Juve loses racist chant appeal

Juventus has lost its appeal against a one-match ban for fans’ racist abuse of Inter Milan player Mario Balotelli earlier this month. In turning down the plea, the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) court of justice confirmed that Juve will have to play its next home match, against Lecce on Sunday, behind closed doors

Swine Flu Situation in Italy

For Italians, Mexico is quite a popular holiday destination.  As a result of this popularity, the swine flu (’febbre suina’ in Italian) outbreak which is sweeping Mexico at the moment, has garnered the attention of Italy’s media. Health officials have already been on television stating that those eating pork are in no danger, but sales of pork based products will no doubt fall until the swine flu problem in Mexico ends.  In the meantime, many of Italy’s producers of hams and salamis must be worried.  We are in the middle of an international economic crisis already, and the Mexican situation will compound the problem for producers of pork based products. Suspected cases of swine flu are already being reported in Italy.  However, so far, none have proved positive.  But Italians will be returning from holidays in Mexico, if they have not done so already.

Lycopene useful in preventing heart attacks and strokes

Lycopene, the antioxidant pigment found in tomatoes and other red fruits, can help prevent heart attacks and strokes as well as prostate cancer, doctors attending the Mediterranean Cardiology Meeting in Taormina said on Monday. Lycopene blocks the oxidation of lipids and consequently reduces the formation of plaques which cause cardiovascular diseases, they said.

A major clean-up job on the first ‘ring’ of the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been successfully completed, officials said Monday. The lowest ring of arches has been cleaned to restore its marble and other stonework to gleaming perfection after a five-month operation.

Prince Charles calls for ‘environmental renaissance’

The world needs to see an ‘environmental renaissance’ and a new way of thinking to stop irreversible climate change, Britain’s Prince Charles told the Chamber of Deputies Monday. Charles, who arrived Sunday for a three-day visit to Italy, told Italian MPs that the renaissance would be the result of ”putting together scientific knowledge, innovation and imagination”.
