Life dealt a cruel blow to a happy, outgoing, sporty eleven-year-old from the Veneto one year ago. The youngster, called Beatrice but known to everyone as Bebe, contracted fulminant meningitis and, following a septic crisis, her arms and legs were amputated.

Amore 14, the new film by author and director Federico Moccia , opens in Italian cinemas tomorrow and teenagers are keen to see this cinematic portrait of their own generation. Moccia, in trying to recreate the world of youth with loving attention to detail, has made “youth” the main character of the film.

Pope Benedict announced last week that he is willing to accept disaffected Anglicans into the Catholic Church as a body. What is more, he will make conversion easier for them. The Pontiff’s approval of the “Apostolic Constitution” document will allow Anglicans who join the Roman Catholic Church to retain some of their liturgical traditions

David Mills, the British lawyer who formerly acted as Silvio Berlusconi’s offshore legal adviser, failed to have his conviction for accepting a bribe from the Premier overturned by a Milan court on Tuesday.

Statistics indicate that car crashes are the primary cause of death for children in Italy. Accidents Do Happen in Italy The numbers worry Italian car manufacturer Fiat, so, along with the Fiat dealers association, the Italian car manufacturer is promoting in an initiative designed to underline the importance of taking safety measures to keep Italian children safe in cars. The Fiat instigated car safety initiative, which is now in its second year, is called BimbiSicuramente . ‘Bimbi’ is Italian for small children, and ‘Sicuramente’ means ’surely’, ’securely’ and ’safely’ in Italian. Putting the two Italian words together creates an effective combination of related meanings which should help get the message across -and save a few young lives.

Wedding bells may soon be ringing – or, as the Italian press puts it, there may soon be orange blossom – for the Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini. Asked about a wedding date during the recording of an episode of the Maurizio Costanzo Show to be aired on TV on Sunday, Gelmini replied, “Soon. Certainly I’ll be ready in 2010”
