Image Podcast Language Podcast: Italian Audio La Befana Text Teaser: Andrea Antonioni delves into the tradition of the Epiphany witch. Try reading and listening to the Italian version first then check with the English version. English: Words by Andrea Antonioni A typically Italian festival is that of the Befana – an oldwoman who, on the night of the 5th and 6th January, comes down the chimney, mounted on a broomstick, under the weight of a sack filled to the brim with toys, chocolates and sweets (inthe bottom of which there is quite a bit of ash and coal) and fills the stockings left hanging up by the children.

Custom Teaser: “Oh, it was nothing special – just a family meal”, said my friend Gina’s mother-in-law when I thanked her for a Christmas lunch at which she had served ten different dishes. She was being modest, of course, but there was also some truth in the statement..

Someone who has raised Italy’s image positively throughout the world.’ Those who have been mulling this question over, Italians and non-Italians, have come up with an interesting list

For services rendered my other half received a rather special Christmas hamper this year. The hamper was crammed full of all sorts of Italian food goodies. One such goody was was something called Crutin. Those in the know will tell you that Crutin is an Italian cheese with pieces of black truffe embedded in it. The very same in-the-know people may also say that Crutin tastes very good. Having now sampled said Crutin cheese, I have to say I agree. It is very good. Indeed, so good it was that I decided to write something more about it here.
