Landslide, Maierato, Calabria, Italy

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

In some areas of hilly and mountainous Italy, landslides are not uncommon.  Indeed yesterday in Maierato in the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia the earth moved. Someone was there to catch the event on film and a video of this landslide made it onto YouTube, and I’ve added it for you to see.  I found it frightening.

Guess Where in Italy? – Part 10

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

This week’s Guess Where in Italy? photo quiz on BlogfromItaly.com features a photo courtesy of @pixiebisous, whose colourful image caught my little eye on Twitter. Ninja obsessed Italophile @pixiebisous thinks that people, especially Italians, will find it easy to guess which picture postcard Italian seaside village has been immortalised in her photograph.

When Digital Television is not Digital

Monday, February 1st, 2010

For a long time I thought we were lucky enough to have the new fangled, all singing and dancing, much vaunted digital television.  No silly little set top box for us, or so I thought. I was wrong.  Just after Christmas our digital television provider Fastweb stopped transmitting Italy’s state RAI television channels.  The transmission ceased in readiness for the completion of the transition from analogue to digital television in Italy, I learned

Images from Glorious Abruzzo in Italy

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Whilst flicking through what YouTubes has to offer, I came across this little photo presentation of the region of Abruzzo in Italy, which, if you remember was hit by an earthquake in April 2009. This selection of views of Abruzzo is very nice, and there are a few images which show the havoc wreaked by the quake too.  The presentation is new.  It was placed on YouTube today -the 20 January 2010. Captions show the names of the places in the photographs, and I get the impression that the person who created this presentation is most probably an Italian from the Abruzzo region.  Indeed, I wonder whether this video was created to help give the people of the area a little pick me up.

Building Bridges to Italy with Lots of Good News

Friday, January 1st, 2010

BlogfromItaly is kicking off 2010 on an optimistic note.  This post is about BridgestoItaly – a networking site set up by enterprising Italian Bianca Dellepiane to provide a little online publicity for the work of Italian scientists in the Biotech, Nanotech, Cleantech and High-tech sectors. However before saying some more about BridgestoItaly, a New Year’s rant about bad news.

The Italian of the Decade – Who Would You Choose?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I’ve been having an interesting discussion over on Twitter via my @newsfromitaly persona.  The question I posed was ‘Who’s your Italian of the Decade? Someone who has raised Italy’s image positively throughout the world.’ Those who have been mulling this question over, Italians and non-Italians, have come up with an interesting list
