While pizza is to be found in just about every corner of the world, its popularity in its land of origin has never diminished. Pizza is as popular today in Italy as it ever has been. Have you ever wondered where in Italy the best pizzas can be found? Seeing as much of Italy appears to be fuming over the latest escapade of the Berlusconi government, I felt it might be nice to take a break from politics for a moment and to look at a distinctly more appetising subject, which is also much easier to digest: pizza . Italian author Orietta Boncompagni Ludovisi has had her book “ The Best Pizzerias In Italy ” republished some five times since it first appeared in 1996. Each time a new edition of Boncompagni Ludovisi’s pizza book hits the bookshops of Italy, it sells like hot cakes. Perhaps that should be “sells like hot pizzas”

I like the idea of doing something different on holiday, and although I’ve never done it, I can think of nothing quite as appealing as the idea of floating silently over Tuscany in a balloon. Unsurprisingly, I am not the first to have thought of this interesting way to see Italy, and on YouTube there are quite a few videos of balloons over Tuscany

In some areas of hilly and mountainous Italy, landslides are not uncommon. Indeed yesterday in Maierato in the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia the earth moved. Someone was there to catch the event on film and a video of this landslide made it onto YouTube, and I’ve added it for you to see. I found it frightening.

If you follow the Italian news, then you will know something of the amnesty designed to recoup the billions Italians have stashed out of the reach of Italy’s taxman in comfy offshore accounts. Said amnesty has, so far, seen some 80 billion Euros return to Italian banks. A not inconsiderable sum, I’m sure you will agree. As a consequence of its success, the amnesty has been extended well into 2010 to encourage even more of Italy’s tax dodgers to bring their gains back within the grasp of Italy’s cash starved taxman. Offshore Banking Now, the odd thing is that some of those who have taken advantage of Italy’s amnesty will be more than a little relieved to place their dosh in the coffers of honest Italian banks. Indeed, from what I have heard, some are literally scrambling to move their offshore fortunes onshore

Legitimate Impediment is not, as one might think, the latest Hollywood blockbuster courtroom drama about to burst onto 3d screens in cinemas around the world near you. Instead, it is the latest ruse by Italy’s colourful leader to get himself of embarrassing legal hooks. The most recent card in the get out of court free pack is a law based on something called ‘legitimate impediment’. What this new law will mean, if it slips all the way through Italy’s parliament, is that if Italy’s premier decides that he has important government business to attend to, he can have any court causes he is called to appear in postponed for six months. By repeatedly making legitimate impediment claims it will be possible for an Italian prime minister in power to keep himself out of the range of Italy’s courts for a total of up to 18 months

We are over a week or so into the New Year. However despite official celebrations being over, fireworks are still going off in 2010 in Italy. First a bomb exploded in front of a court house down in southern Italy, and then immigrants started rioting in the very same region of southern Italy – Calabria. Reggio Calabria in Italy – 'Ndragheta mafia Heartland It’s being reported in the Italian press that the Reggio Calabria court bomb was planted by the ‘ndrangheta mafia, and other reports suggest that the very same mafia group may well have provoked immigrants in Rosarno into rioting.

Yes, while it may be somewhat difficult to believe, the huge, black and grouchy wild boars which inhabit Italy can sometimes be made to pay. Indeed, in Italy compensation for wild boar induced damage to cars may sometimes be successfully claimed. This fact was ascertained from Twitter via a Tweet by Gloria of the Casina di Rosa vacation house down in Tuscany who had had a close encounter of the car damaging kind with one of these big pigs. Despite having caused damage to Gloria’s car to the tune of some 3,600 Euros, the wild boar in question, which Gloria’s car ran over, managed to get up and run off. Snorting loudly, presumably. Must have been quite a sore boar though.
