The cities of Rome and Venice will be twinned for the Carnival season this year with Rome reviving traditions that have not been seen in the city since the seventeenth century. From 6th – 16th February the streets and squares of Rome will become a massive Carnival space, peopled with masked characters, musicians, actors, dancers and horseriders

Italian utility companies are not usually super-efficient at disconnecting the services of late payers but this week a water company acted quickly and cut off an important client – the legendary US Sixth Fleet, which operates in the Mediterranean Sea out of the port of Gaeta [Latina]. By doing so the company nearly caused a diplomatic incident.

The first museum of contemporary arts on a national level in Italy, the Maxxi Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo in Rome opened for a weekend preview on November 14th before its full opening to the public scheduled for spring 2010. In reality two museums – Maxxi Art and Maxxi Architecture – the complex will provide flexible urban space for both indoor and outdoor exhibitions.

Art restorers and researchers in Rome have discovered what is almost certainly a tiny self-portrait of Caravaggio [1571 or 73 – 1610] hidden in the detail of the Caravaggio Bacco [Bacchus] [1597] in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence .

The fourth edition of the International Roma Film Festival is officially planned from 15 to 23 october. Among the 14 films competing for the final prize “Alza la testa” with Sergio Castellitto, “Up in the air” by Jason Reitman – Juno’s author – and “Plan B” by Marc Berger.

Rome is recruiting a fleet of “tourist angels” to help the millions of tourist going through the Eternal City every year. The city’s tourism chief Mauro Cutrufo announced that a 60-strong team of angels on electric chariots is being formed. They will speed to visitors’ rescue when they look in trouble or simply at a loss where to turn next, said Cutrufo, who is also Rome’s deputy mayor.
